Frequently Asked Questions  E-mail

We asked Coordinator Jeff what do people ask you the most about Op We Care and he told us the following:

What items are most needed? most requested?

WE NEED DONATIONS!! We need to collect LOTS of donations. We plan to pack approximately 300 care packages next month and our supplies are low after the May packing party. I have attached an updated copy of the Operation We Care Donation List. There have been some minor changes, specifically we have deleted cotton balls, q-tips and envelopes from the list and have added instant oatmeal. Here is a short list of the top 10 items most needed:

We need all the items on the donation list
but here are the TOP 10 MOST NEEDED ITEMS:

  1. Chef Boyardee canned poptop pasta
  2. Bar Soap
  3. Shampoo/Body Wash
  4. Granola Bars
  5. Hot Chocolate Packets
  6. Deodorant (non aerosol)
  7. Instant Oatmeal Packets
  8. Microwave Popcorn
  9. Ramen Noodles (brick not the cup)
  10. Tea bags

We also need ziplock bags in the sandwich, quart and gallon size to package some of the items in to prevent cross contamination. Each of these items can be purchased for less than $2 at most stores. A single item, a bag of items or a carload doesn't matter - they all add up!

Can I donate money instead of items? How much does it cost to send a box?

Yes, we use the money to pay for postage and more items. Most folks donate approved items but many more donate time, resources or money. Here's where to mail a check. Postage cost is our biggest challenge. Each care package costs $12.95 to ship. November 2010 we shipped 328 care packages and spent over $4000. In 2010 alone we spent over $7000 in postage. Thanks to the generous donations of many service organizations, local businesses and individuals we have been able to make this work. If you would like to help please drop off a check at any Operation We Care Donation Collection site. You can also mail a check.

Where can I drop off items?

You can always stop by Harley-Davidson of Seaford or Minuteman Press but check out our list of Delmarva drop off centers for a location near you! If you can't find one convenient for you please contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and we will arrange for a pickup. Donations will also be accepted at the Packing Party on November 13.

What items are not allowed?

The huge Family Size Items are not permitted as they take up too much valueable space in the care package. Please no pork products, alcohol, liquid hand sanitizer, aerosol cans, or glass containers. The tiny "travel size" or "trial size" are too small. We generally don't pack the trial size or family size items for a couple reasons. Trial size and family size items we take to the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, MD when we visit the Wounded Warriors and we also share items with Forbes Hall, a local veterans transitional housing organization.

Can you color a box?

WE NEED BOXES COLORED!! If you are a school teacher and are looking for a great class project we have just the answer. Each time we ship care packages we have the area school kids color the inside of the boxes with supportive messages of thanks and appreciation. It's a great way to get kids involved in the community and the morale boost when the boxes are received is awesome. The boxes come 25 to a case and I can make arrangements to get them to you.
